ice boat

How can an ice boat go faster than the wind speed?
I had this question in college, and I know it has something to do with vectors, but I can’t remember how to solve this problem.
Because of the TOTAL force acting on the large area of the sail.

Ice!
$12.98 When the Royal Navy discharged Tristan Jones and told him he was physically unfit for seafaring, he got hold of a small craft, converted it to a cruising ketch, and kicked away from shore. Determined to sail farther north than anyone else, he set out from Iceland accompanied only by his dog, Nelson. For two winters he endured constant danger in bleak polar regions. He survived violent snowstorms, a ravenous polar bear, and getting stranded on an ice pack in the Arctic Ocean, all while grappling with loneliness, despair, and dwindling supplies. Then the ice shifted, crushing his boat like a matchbox, and he came face-to-face with cold oblivion… |

Ice!
$11.49 When Tristan Jones, who became one of the best known boat sailors and writers of our times, was discharged from the Navy, and told he was physically unfit for more seagoing, he got hold of a small craft, Creswell, which he converted to a cruising ketch, and started sailing. Then, determined to sail farther north than anyone else, Jones set out from Iceland, accompanied only by Nelson, the one-eyed, three-legged dog he had inherited. Jones spent two winters full of continuous suspense and danger in this bleak polar region. He was trapped by violent snowstorms, attacked by a ravenous polar bear, and marooned on an ice pack in the Artic Ocean, all the while grappling and loneliness and despair, plus dwingling supplies. Finally, when the ice shifted, crushing Creswell like a matchbox, Jones had to deal with possible death! |

The Lamp, the Ice, and the Boat Called Fish
$3.48 In 1913, a boat named Karluk, Aleutian for "fish," part of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, became stuck in the Arctic ice. On board were a captain and crew, scientists and explorers, a cat, forty sled dogs, Iñupiaq hunters, and an Iñupiaq family with two small girls. Even with the Iñupiaq and their skills of hunting and sewing, even with the family's care and wisdom, even with the compassion and courage of their captain, odds for survival in the cold, dark Arctic seem against the passengers of the Karluk. Here is a riveting, unforgettable story, poetically told and exquisitely illustrated with rounded scratchboard art that captures the strength and grace of Iñupiaq culture. Details of centuries-old crafts and skills â?? of sewing boots from caribou legs and ugruk skin, of quickly cutting snow houses, of wearing wooden goggles to ward off snowblindness â?? will enrich modern imaginations. And by the story's end, listeners will know something of the way of life in the high north, something of the song of the place, the wide sky, the sound of the wind, the ptarmigan. |

Shackleton's Boat Journey
$12.98 The firsthand account of an incredible Antarctic adventure. Frank A. Worsley was the captain of the H.M.S. Endurance, the ship used by the legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton in his 1914-16 expedition to the Antarctic. On its way to the Antarctic continent the Endurance became trapped and then crushed by ice, and the ship's party of twenty-eight drifted on an ice floe for five months. Finally reaching an uninhabited island, Shackleton, Worsley, and four others sailed eight hundred miles in a small boat to the island of South Georgia, an astounding feat of navigation and courage. All hands survived this ill-fated expedition; as Worsley writes, "By self-sacrifice and throwing his own life into the balance, [Shackleton] saved every one of his men . . . although at times it had looked unlikely that one could be saved." This book is the astounding and inspiring true story behind the forthcoming Wolfgang Petersen film Endurance. A native New Zealander, Frank A. Worsley served as a reserve officer in the Royal Navy before becoming captain of the Endurance. He commanded two ships in World War I, for which he was decorated, and sailed with Shackleton again in 1921. In 1925 he was the joint leader of the British Arctic Expedition. He died in 1943. |

Thin Ice
$19.48 The earth's polar regions have been the subject of three major research initiatives called "international polar years" (IPY). Beginning with the first IPY in 1882-1883, these initiatives have shared the goal of advancing basic scientific knowledge of the geography and geophysical processes of these remote lands and oceans. International polar year events have always captured the imagination of the public, yet the polar regions remain a distant and disconnected realm for most people. The global science community is set to begin another IPY in 2007-2008 with a special sense of urgency: simply put, the polar regions are a critical part of the earth's climate system, which is now undergoing rapid change in response to human activities. The 2007-2008 events will extend beyond basic studies in the geophysical and biological sciences to focus on global climate change and the research presently underway to advance our understanding of the human dimensions of a shifting Arctic environment.Climate change is a pressing and much debated phenomenon of our time. Thin Ice accompanies an important exhibition, opening on January 20, 2007 at the Hood Museum of Art, that is one of the first to explore the human dimensions of climate change in the Inuit concept and perception of the Arctic climate as part of their culture. The exhibition presents objects from the Hood's permanent collection--boat miniatures, harpoons, masks, clothing, prints, and canoes, along with photographs--that are deeply embedded in the social and spiritual fabric of Inuit society while addressing the global debate around climate change. The Hood Museum of Art has partnered with the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding and the Institute of Arctic Studies in the development of what will be the first comprehensive exhibition of Dartmouth's Arctic collections and this accompanying catalogue. The exhibition is curated by A. Nicole Stuckenberger, Stefansson Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Arctic Studies, Dickey Center for International Understanding, Dartmouth College, as part of International Polar Year. At every stage of the exhibition and catalogue project, the Hood Museum of Art, the Institute of Arctic Studies, and Dr. Stuckenberger received support from William Fitzhugh, Director of the Arctic Studies Center, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Igor Krupnik, Curator of Circumpolar Ethnology at the Arctic Studies Center, Kenneth S. Yalowitz, director of the Dickey Center and Ross A. Virginia, head of the Institute and Professor of Environmental Studies, who generously supported the exhibition and catalogue throughout this project. Ross Virginia has spearheaded the programs and conferences at the College in relation to the International Polar Year and is overseeing Dartmouth's role in hosting the international gathering for Arctic Science Summit Week in March 2007. |
