How to test a small engine ignition condenser?

Is there a way to test a capacitor on to see if it is working correctly? Apart from replacing what I mean. The small engine is 25 years old 2 hp Johnson outboard motor and the spark is strong, but with a tester interrmittant spark. What exactly does a capacitor do? Is it like a capacitor? Can I put 2 in parallel? That would help the quality of spark?

The purpose of the capacitor is a capacitor and may be placed in parallel, but will have no benefit. They are relatively inexpensive, but if the spark is intermittent would looking at the distance of the points, and if he misses velocity, then the issue may be vacuum advance.
