two stroke outboards
2-stroke, 4-stroke, diesel – does anybody know how they compare in terms of fuel economy?
I need a new outboard for my planing boat, about 40 to 60 HP is fine.
I will be commuting to work with it, so fuel efficiency is an issue. On the other hand, diesels are so expensive I could drive a two-stroke for ten years before I start to break even.
Does anybody know what the comparison is?
Say, if the 2-stroke uses 12 litres per hour, how much would the 4-stroke and diesel of similar output take in the same boat?
Since not everybody is rushing to answer your question: You should have asked “efficiency for commercially available engines” of that power level.
1. 2-stroke engines are significantly smaller, lighter and simpler to build. Efficiency for a good design is equal to a 4-stroke engine. However “2-strokers” have a bad reputation for marine applications. “Oil discharge through the exhaust”. This, I assume no problem in Otago Bay. Unless your soul is “green”, Then you need to go to confession: “father I have sinned” — in another time “mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”
2. ‘4-stroke’ is the universal standard for that power level
3. Diesel fuel has 20 to 25% more energy content (by weight or volume). The engines are heavier, sturdier, and have a more sophisticated design (fuel efficiency). As you mention their price is set sky-high. They are built to last “from here to eternity”.

I have attached a rather lengthy Wiki article, if you should care. (Note, the “biggies” propelling tankers and container ships are often 2-stroke, with efficiencies of almost 60%. That is achieved by burning the diesel fuel at VERY high temps. Result, significant NOx emission.)
